Summary of AGIS2010
A successful AGIS2010 is now complete. This year’s AGIS included
both a Symposium, with presentations and poster sessions, and
two workshops.
The keynote was presented by Dr. Stefan Bachu from Alberta
Innovates – Technologies Future. Dr. Bachu is a member of the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), who shared the
Nobel Peace Prize with former US Vice President Al Gore in 2007.
Dr. Bachu’s paper titled “Subsurface Characteristics of Acid Gas
Disposal Operations in Western Canada: A Precursor to CO2
Storage” set an excellent tone for the entire conference.
Symposium presentations covered topics including the physical
properties and phase equilibrium relative to the injection
process, reservoir engineering, process engineering,
geochemistry, and economics. These included papers on
conventional acid gas injection, injection of CO2 for
enhanced oil recovery, and carbon capture and sequestration
(CCS). Authors of papers came from China, France, Germany,
Canada, and the USA - New Mexico, New Jersey, North Dakota, and
Washington, DC. In addition to the presentation, there were
eleven poster papers covering similar topics.
The workshops, new to this year’s event, were well received.
AGIS2010 started with an interesting short course on Sour Gas
Treating presented by Dr. Ray Tomcej and finished with a
workshop on Acid Gas Injection by Dr. John Carroll. These were
the bookends to two-days of excellent papers.
In attendance for the four-day event were individuals from ten
different countries from as far away as Australia and China and
as close as just a few blocks away. Attendees represented ten
universities and forty companies.
